A Photo Shoot and Two Cakes
Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 04:00AM I just wanted to share a couple cakes with you that I did last weekend for a photo shoot with the local newspaper. But first let me say what a honor and privilege it was for me that they would even ask me to do this. They called to ask if they could do a story on me in the Sunday Lifestyle section for being published in the international book, 1000 ideas for decorating cupcakes, cakes and, cookies and of course I said, "YES".
The first cake I did was actually one that I had planned to make for my birthday. It was a vintage chevy truck that had Christmas presents in the back. I had a license plate on the back that read Santa and the front was adorned with a tiny Christmas wreath. Here are some photos below of the details:
Here are a few things I learned from making this cake:
1. You practically need an engineering degree when carving a cake into a vehicle.
2.The bed of a truck can not be completely made of cake if you want it to not fall apart.
3. I have an awesome husband that was willing to get rice crispy treats from the convenient store at 11:00 at night!
Okay seriously, plan, plan, plan ahead of time and always remember that carving a cake will be a trial and error process and that hopefully the next one will go much better and not take 18 hours!
I made the presents and toys about a week ahead. Everything was edible except the presents.
All the decorations were made from fondant.
The next cake was actually a purse that I designed for myself. I would love to have a purse that looks just like this cake, but have yet to find it. Looks like I might have to find someone to make it for me, Anyone?
This cake took about 6 hours give or take and was much less complicated than the truck. I first carved the cake and then made ruffles from strips of fondant to cover it. I will try to get around to making another one and this time take pics to give you a tutorial on making one for yourself.
I made the rosette a week ahead and then used edible glitter to add sparkle to it. The shoe and necklace were for decoration only.
This is a close up of the handle.
Although the cakes were time consuming, I certainly learned a lot for the next time and I loved getting to see the final product!
