How to Apply Ribbon to Your Cupcake Tree

I have been asked by some of you out there how  I decorate my cupcake trees. So I decided I would put together a little tutorial for you. So here we go:

What you need:

1 pair of scissors (not dull)

1 box of Zips ultra thin clear adhesive lines 1/8" Permanent (you can also purchase these at your scrapbook store)

5 yards of 7/8" width ribbon (I purchase mine from our superstore)

1 cupcake tree (I am using the ones my FIL makes, but you can use one of your choice)

Ribbon 1

First: Cut ribbon to width of first round plate on tree.Cut sticky strip about 2-3 " in length and apply by rubbing the back of paper strip is attached to (see below). I only apply mine about 4-5" apart and not the entire width of plate or it will be very difficult to remove when you want to change out ribbon colors. Note to self: Start using hand cream!

Ribbon 2

Apply Ribbon around entire plate and adhere the ends with sticky strip. Mine looks a little ruff since this is a piece opf ribbon I had already used. But no worries since this will be hidden by my bow!

Ribbon 3

To make Bow:

I have chosen to make a clean line bow, but you can also just tie a piece of ribbon into a bow and ahere it.

Cut a 5 1/2 - 6" strip of ribbon and a 2 1/2" strip of ribbon. (Sorry about the blurry pics. I guess I was a little shakey this a.m.)

Ribbon 5

Ribbon 10

Apply adhesive to both ends of the 5-6" strip of ribbon and fold each end to the center of ribbon (the finished bow is 2" wide so you can eyeball it or measure (I tend to be an eyeballer).

Ribbon 7  Ribbon 9

Apply adhesive to the ends of the 2 1/2" strip and wrap around the folded piece starting and ending at the back of the bow.

Ribbon 11   Ribbon 12

Apply sticky strip the whole length of ribbon and adhere to the cupcake tree covering the seams of the ribbon you applied.

Ribbon 13   Ribbon 14

Continue on til you have covered the entire tree.

Ribbon 15

*** To remove ribbon and replace with a different color: Carefully remove bow and peel ribbon away from sides of plate (you could use a blow dryer to heat the glue and remove but I have never had to do this). You can apply new ribbon using the same sticky strip that was left on the cupcake tree and add a few more to ensure it sticks or you can redo the entire tree (I have never had to redo it but I have just added a few more strips). I put my old ribbon in a jar and reuse it as needed. Good Luck and feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have!

I just found this blog and love it because I am a cake novice and want to learn how to make different things for birthday parties and other church events. A friend loaned me an iron cupcake stand to use for our Easter Egg Hunt. Each cupcake sits on its on little stand so to speak and there is room for 34 cupcakes. I would love to know how to decorate that so the iron isn't the star of the show. I will definitely keep visiting your site. Thanks for helping all of us with your ideas and recipies.
